from Library Journal
When Krakatoa, an island volcano off the coast of Java, erupted on August 27, 1883, it spewed debris 24 miles into the air, was heard 4000 miles away, and caused barometers throughout Europe to go berserk. Tsunamis destroyed 165 villages and killed 36,417 people, but as recounted by Winchester (The Map That Changed the World) in this fascinating history, the eruption's devastating effects were not only environmental (dust circled the globe for years) but also political. Winchester notes that prior to the eruption, a Javanese Muslim priest had predicted that floods, blood-colored rain, volcanic eruptions, and death would precede the beginning of a holy war against the infidel. The resulting rash of murderous attacks by fundamentalist Muslims against European colonists living in their midst, he argues, was also a reaction to the escalating threat of Western imperialism into Muslim territory. As one of the first such Muslim outbreaks against Western control, it stands as a cautionary message for the future, along with the disturbing fact that Anak Krakatoa ("child of Krakatoa") has grown 500 feet in 25 years in one of the world's most active and dangerous volcanic regions. As a rich blend of science and history, this book is highly recommended for most public and academic libraries. - Gloria Maxwell, Penn Valley Community Coll. Lib., Kansas City, MO

Annotation
It's Godzilla meets The Bridges of Madison County, as only Christopher Moore could spin it. It's September in Pine Cove, California, where the tourists have finally decamped for the season, the sun is slanting through the trees, and the local psychiatrist has just decided to switch everyone from antidepressants to placebos without telling them. Suddenly, business is booming at the Head of the Slug Saloon, where a melancholy blues man from the Mississippi Delta has settled in for the winter. Unfortunately for the town's newly minted blues fans, however, a colossal sea beast is also drawn to the sound of the slide guitar. When a tanker truck explodes at the local gas station, it's the first sign that all hell is about to break loose in Pine Cove. Can the unlikely constable Theophilus Crowe curb his gonzo appetites long enough to find out who - or what - is behind the explosion and the resulting series of mysterious crimes? Can Molly Michon, the has-been scream queen and resident crazy lady, control her dual personalities? Can anyone explain why a town so morose is suddenly so...libidinous? And what's the story behind the mysterious trailer that has just shown up in the back corner of the local trailer park?

from Publishers Weekly
A bubbly blend of farcical humor and madcap mystery, Donnelly's newest (after Died to Match) finds Seattle wedding planner Carnegie Kincaid in the midst of chaos once again. After being exiled from her dry-rotted houseboat, Carnegie's life plummets from bad to worse when her business partner mysteriously departs, her best friend stops speaking to her and her boyfriend tells her he's married. Her professional life peaks and dives as well, one of the low points being when a flamboyant Frenchman humiliates her on live TV while luring her customers away. Then, to make matters worse, the best man in her latest wedding turns up dead, transforming a cushy assignment to plan a celebrity wedding into a race to catch a killer before he/she picks off the rest of the bridal party. Many of the characters that have made Donnelly's Wedding Planner series so endearing are absent here-no Boris the Mad Russian Florist or Juice, cake creator extraordinaire. But the book's nonstop action and judiciously doled out clues will keep both romance and mystery lovers riveted until the Dickensian denouement

From BookList, December 1, 2002
Charged with designing a signature look for a new all-girl band, stylist and sometime-sleuth Dallas O'Connor happily jets off to a video shoot on an idyllic Caribbean island. At first glance her hotel, the island, and its attractive inhabitants seem perfect, but soon enough she realizes that there's trouble in paradise. The band is hiding something, someone is experimenting with voodoo curses, and the name of an old enemy surfaces--along with an undercover FBI agent and a dead body on the beach. With her usual style, Dallas manages to conduct a murder investigation amidst rum-soaked parties and a flirtation with the hotel's mouthwatering but enigmatic chef, dressing herself and everyone else fabulously all the while. Despite a cliche-ridden climax complete with a well-timed power outage, Dallas's third case is an addictive addition to the series with a setting that will make any reader long for a vacation.
